My mother said the best time to prune is early and often so we all carry our Gardencut shears and a tube of Phytech 50 in our pockets when we’re working in the nursery. Phytech 50 is a lanolin based cut paste that protects wounds from insects and disease while still allowing the tissue to breathe. I’ve seen one application of Phytech 50 in place for over a year as a difficult wound healed on a favorite tree. I appreciate that the neutral beige color doesn’t draw attention to the wound as it heals. All of our cuts over 1/4 inch are treated with Phytech 50.
