Rock Ropes

Along with the trees, rocks are the ‘bones’ of the garden. Rock Ropes are an ancient Japanese art traditionally hung in Temples, Monasteries and strolling gardens of imperial aristocrats, Daimyos and shoguns. They were often constructed by Zen priests, originally called "ishi-tate-so" (priests who move rocks). These ropes are individually constructed by hand using stones from Boston Harbor adding an American historical interest to the ancient art and heavy gauge copper wire for secure long-lasting construction. We enjoy hanging them in gardens along footpaths, or from the corner of a roof. The smaller ropes can be hung from a sturdy branch on a mature tree. Rock Ropes represent the natural abstract elements of Japanese design, reflecting serenity, art and tranquility.
