Flowering Cherry Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula'

Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula' is truly a living piece of art history. It's one week flurry of single white draping flowers in early spring conjures images of the oldest of Japanese paintings. After the blossoms fade to pink, the medium green ovate, serrated leaves emerge in opposite pairs along the waterfall like pendulous branches. As spring turns into summer; the tone of the painting changes with the maturity of the dark green leaves, and the appearance of small cherries starting out red then maturing to black. In the fall, 'Pendula' changes the canvas again by developing its dark green leaves into a fiery orange-red. Finally, in early winter, the living picture is complete when the leaves fall to reveal the smooth dark reddish brown bark on it's structure that sometimes curl back to reveal shiny undergrowth. As a bonsai, this flowering cherry tree can be your own personal work of living art.
